100 years of Indian cinema: Madhubala, Madhuri, Aishwarya Rai as B-wood's mujra queens

Mujra queens Madhubala, Rekha to Aishwarya Kareena Madhuri in 100 years of Indian Cinema
Bollywood has come a long way from classical dance sequences to western salsa in films.
However, what remains the unbeaten dance form is the mujra which is still the most coveted performance longed by an actress in her career. From Meena Kumari who infused life in the mujra dance form with her minute emotions in Pakeezah, confident Madhubala danced in the royal darbar of Mughal- A-Azam to teary eyed Rekha, Mujra queens have always ruled Bollywood with their charm and poise.
Taking over from the yesteryear mujra queens, Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen and Malaika Arora have revived the trend with a touch of spice and modernity.
Picking up the trend, Madhuri Dixit is set to revive the mujra scene once again with her “Apne Khumar Mein” song in Dedh Ishqiya. Striking back with her elaborate dance number, she will be competing with the other ruling mujra queens from Rekha, Madhubala, Meena Kumari and Aishwarya to name a few.

Madhubala was the first ever reigning mujra queen with her “Isi mehfil me kismet azma kar hum bhi dekhenge” who paved way for Meena Kumari to pick up her art in Pakeezah. Madhubala’s grace, classical steps and charm was behind the success of Bollywood’s biggest blockbuster Mughal-A-Azam.

Meena Kumari was the most polished mujra dancer with highly minute steps and emotions weaved into an artistic performance in Pakeezah. Her charm in “Inhi logo ne le liya dupatta mera” and her grace in “Dhade Rahiyo” is still an unmatched one.
