Fox Star Studios is
partnering with Phantom Films to produce Anurag Kashyap's ambitious
project Bombay Velvet that stars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma as
onscreen lovers in the Mumbai of 1950s.
The first movie in the planned trilogy on the Maximum city, Bombay
Velvet will go on floors in July 2013 and is slated for a worldwide
release on December 25, next year.
Set against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and Jazz, the
film tells the story of how Bombay became a Metropolis. Historian Gyan
Prakash's book Mumbai Fables forms the basis for the movie. Prakash has
also worked on the script of the movie.
Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, who have been paired together for
the first time, play lovers whose lives intermingle with the evolution
of the city of Bombay, through the 50s to early 70s.
"Bombay Velvet is my first film in a trilogy about Bombay, before
it became a Metropolis. It's a story that has always fascinated me and
we have been developing it for about four years, and I am very excited
that now its fully ready and we begin shoot this year," Anurag Kashyap,
who is currently at Cannes Film Festival, said in a statement.
Phantom Films' Vikas said Bombay Velvet was an "intricately researched and beautifully fictionalised" film.
"We are looking forward to working together with Fox Star to create
a phenomenal cinematic experience of this story for the big screen,"
Bahl added.
Amit Trivedi is composing the music of the film, which will be reminiscent of the golden sound of '60s.
