Bombay Talkies gets shot dead by Wadala

The war is over! And ‘Shootout At Wadala’ has turned out to be a clear winner. There are no two ways about it as ‘Bombay Talkies’ lag behind with a huge margin. With tremendous good word of mouth is helping the film but, the fact remains, SAW has outshined BT everywhere.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh informs, “‘Shootout At Wadala’ has fared exceptionally well in certain circuits (Mumbai-Maharashtra, C.P. Berar, Nizam), but was fairly good elsewhere. Overall, the weekend total is impressive, in view of the fact that the film stars known names, but not major stars to notch a fat weekend. It has collected approx. Rs 30.7 cr nett in its opening weekend. Fri Rs. 10.10 cr, Sat Rs. 9.75 cr, Sun Rs. 10.85 cr. ‘Bombay Talkies’ started on a slow note, but gathered steam on Saturday and Sunday. The word of mouth is terrific and the glowing reviews contributed to an escalation in business at multiplexes. The film has collected approx. Rs 5.05 cr nett in its opening weekend. Fri- Rs. 1.05 cr, Sat- Rs. 1.75 cr, Sun- Rs. 2.25 cr.”
Citing ‘A’ certificate to be the hindrance in the business flow of SAW, trade expert Joginder Tuteja explains, “The film could have scored more but the 'A' certificate kept the family crowds away. The fact also remains that abundance of foul language further eliminated a segment of audience. Nevertheless, one can well assume that the makers would have made these calculations and hence stayed on with the eventual content which has been picked up well by its target audience i.e. youth at the mass centres, especially the single screens. At these centres, footfalls are expected to be stable in weekdays as well.”
He goes on to add, “Yet again however, the predictions went well, this time for the opening of ‘Shootout At Wadala’ which saw around 60% opening. It was pretty much on the cards that the film would have maximum moolah coming in from the mass centres and this is what happened for this Sanjay Gupta directed affair that enjoyed steady footfalls over the weekend. While Friday scored 10 crores, Saturday was just marginally low whereas Sunday saw a jump again, hence leading to a weekend which saw over Rs. 30 crores coming in.”
Trade analyst and film critic Komal Nahta however, brings another side to the story and informs, “‘Shootout At Wadalas’ opening weekend score is Rs. 24 crore. Heavy drop today.”
As per the reports of Koimoi.com, ‘Bombay Talkies’ is an experimental anthology film that is dedicated to a very slim part of the urban cine goers, the pace is strikingly snail paced. Made on a budget of approx Rs. 12 crores, the film earned 1.05 crores at the domestic box office on the opening day. Though the occupancy picked up on Saturday, the film still managed a low collection of Rs.1.75 crores, while Sunday saw the film earning an average amount of Rs. 2.25 crores. The film has earned Rs. 5.05 crores at the domestic box office so far.
The film with artistic bent is appealing for the celebration of the emotion of cinema that has been quintessential to the popular culture. Bollywood played an omnipresent role in governing dictates of trends in fashion and style, Bombay Talkies is an omnibus of heart wrenching films created to the hilt of perfection. The film’s performance is expected to improve this week as the response from those who have watched it has been unanimously positive. Though targeted at a limited section of film viewing audiences, it wasn’t made with the intention of raking up money but to just commemorate the essence of movies and Bollywood in our otherwise mundane lives.
Amidst all this, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer ‘Aashiqui 2’ is working wonders at the box-office. “‘Aashiqui 2’ has maintained fabulously well in its second weekend, despite a strong opposition in the form of ‘Shooutout At Wadala’. It has collected approx. Rs. 9 cr nett in its Weekend 2 (Fri- Rs. 2 cr, Sat- Rs. 3 cr, Sun Rs. 4 cr). Total: Rs 46 cr nett. Super Hit,” concludes Taran Adarsh.
