Amitabh Bachchan speaks in Hindi at Cannes film festival

Amitabh Bachchan walked the red carpet of Cannes with all his co-stars of ‘The Great Gatsby’ and he took the audience with surprise when he spoke in Hindi language. Dressed in black tuxedo, Big B shared the dais with Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' director, Leonardo Di’Caprio and many others. It was a special moment for Big B and he was touched as Cannes celebrates 100 years of Indian cinema.
Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, "Acknowledging Cannes in recognising 100 yrs of Indian Cinema, it was absolutely imperative for me to address, in my Mother tongue!"
He also said, "Director of Cannes delighted to hear the 'music of the Hindi language' spoken, it brought in the universality of the occasion!"
He further said, "For a complete alien in the midst of Cannes to be acknowledged, is the proudest moment for me as an Indian."
Big B will soon be joined by his family members at Cannes, "Media tomorrow, and then wait for the 'bahurani' to arrive with 'bitiya', meet them and get on plane back to London and then home!"
The 66th International Film Festival opened amidst thunderstorm in the French Riviera at Cannes. The festival opened with the screening of Luz Bahrman’s silver screen adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby. The film had already debuted in New York last week and has done a nice business over the weekened, raking in $5.5 million dollars in profit. Still, it was chosen to mark the opening of the ceremony.
Cannes is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema this year. Hence, a number of Indian personalities were present at Cannes including Aishwariya Rai, Vidya Balan, Frieda Pinto etc. But it was the megastar and the beloved of millions of Indian fans Amitabh Bachchan who opened the festival along with other cast members of The Great Gatsby including Leonardo D’Caprio. Amitabh had played the role of Meyer Wolfsheim in the film which marked his Hollywood debut.
The party was in full swing even before the festival opened officially, when Amitabh was invited to a party thrown by Roman Abramovich, Chelsea owner. The megastar tweeted, "...Sometimes you imagine in disbelief that life shall present itself in the form that you may have yearned for ! And then suddenly one day it happens .. it did tonight .. and it is all so un imaginable !! Here at Cannes for opening of Great Gatsby and the energy and excitement of International greats in the field of entertainment .. un forgetable !!"
The festival was inaugurated by Emile Sande – the French actress known for her role in Amelie singing a song from one of Steven Spielburg’s film, The color purple. The festival was then declared open by Bachchan and Leonardo D’Caprio.
Bachchan delivered the opening address. He started with Good Morning in French, but then continued in Hindi. He talked about the journey of Indian cinema over the last 100 years and how Cannes has chosen to honor this journey this year.
