More than a father-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan had always been Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's friend, philosopher and guide. The Bachchan Bahu and Big B get on like house of fire and are extremely fond of each other. While Aishwarya Rai calls him Pa, Amitabh Bachchan calls her bahu rani.

After Aishwarya gifted Amitabh Bachchan and the Bachchan family with the beautiful Beti B, Aaradhya Bachchan, the bond the two shared grew even stronger.

What I learnt from my father: Celebrity speak

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan: My father (the Hindustani classical exponent Hafiz Ali Khan) taught me that with patience and tolerance one could achieve one’s goal in life.”

Amit Kumar: In our time there was no day set aside for mothers and fathers. My father (maestro Kishore Kumar) was from the village and never subscribed to these urban laws of living. His advice to me for the 35 years that I was with him was to believe in simple and high living and to avoid hypocrisy at any cost.

Tiger Shroff: The one main thing that my father(Jackie Shroff) has taught me would be to love and respect my mother. His mother was everything to him. To me both my parents are everything for me. I can’t choose one over the other.

Rahul Khanna: What I learnt from my father (Vinod Khanna) is that dogs are an important part of a fulfilling life.

Rakesh Roshan: My father (legendary music composer Roshan) taught me to practice honesty and passion in whatever I do.

“Earliest memory of Abba…Of him sitting  on a  writing table  in   his kurta-pyjama  smoking incessantly and writing  till the wee hours of  the morning. As a child I was convinced a poet was a euphemism for someone who didn’t have any work. Daddys were supposed to put  on trousers, shirts and  ties and go out to work. In fact  when  people would ask me  what my father did I said he  was a  businessman and  quickly changed the topic….Oh , the follies of innocence…My father was  a   really gorgeous looking man  with  this beautiful voice.  People don’t know this, but he had a tremendous sense of humour. I remember once I was putting eye-drops in his tiny eyes. The drops kept falling all over his face.  He told me about this inept prince who was taught archery and who broke everything in  the house during practice.  Then he said, ‘Put the drops in my ears they’ll   go in my eyes.’ He said such   lines with a poker face.  He always made digs at  the strange procedure in  our films where  tunes came   first and lyrics were  written  into  them later. ‘It’s like first digging a grave and then trying to fit a corpse into it. But I constantly keep   fitting the corpse into the grave, so everyone thinks I’m a good lyricist’ he said…. You know I took my father for granted, as all children tend to. But as a poet he continues to overwhelm me  each day even four years after  his death. Whether it was his poem Makaan or Aurat…they’ve been a great source of inspiration. My concern  for slum-dwellers started with my father’s poem Makaan which  talks of  the irony of  the construction worker who builds  a building with his sweat and blood  but isn’t allowed  to   enter  it.”

Shabana pauses.  “In   Hindi cinema, along with Sahir, Majrooh, Jaan Nissar Akhtar and Shailendra, my father raised the standards of film lyrics. They were often deceptively conversational--Kuch dil ne kaha…..kuch bhi nahin….As  a film lyricist he was a mixture  of  simplicity and poeticality. Take these lines Kissi  ka na  ho jiss pe saaya mujheaisi din  aisi  raat do/ Main manzil to khud dhoond loongi mere haath main zaraa apna haath do/ Qadam-do-qadam tum mera saath  do….And when Lataji sang  these lines by my father….what can be said? You know what was exceptional about my father? He never spoke at home  about  his work.”

“My most favourite Kaifi Azmi lyrics? Hmmmmm… Koi kaise yeh bataaye ke wohtanha kyon hai/who jo apna tha who aur kisika kyon  hai/yehi duniya hai to phir aisi yeh duniya kyon  hai/yehi hota hai to aakhir yehi hota kyon hai?…The simplicity of  these  lines kill me.  Imagine, a spouse-deserted woman (in the film Arth) being faced with these lines. That sense of commitment which artistes of my father’s generation had has been missing. But slowly it’s coming back.in my film fraternity. I like it when film people come out to involve themselves with social issues. I find it very strange when people say, how could Aamir Khan have taken up an issue without knowing the nitty-gritty of it?  Arrey when Gandhiji was thrown off the train in South Africa he responded emotionally. When I went on a hunger strike twenty years ago on behalf of slum-dwellers I didn’t know the issues as well as I do today. I come from a background where my parents believe art is an instrument of social change.  At a time when my father could’ve reveled in the luxury of his success in the film industry he chose to go back to his village in Azamgarh to work  on  its development. Imagine a man paralyzed for thirty years making his village into a place of progress singlehandedly. One day I asked him if he feels frustrated when change doesn’t happen as speedily as he’d have liked. He told me we must all be prepared for  that change  to not happen in  our lifetime.  This to me, is the one mantra that I’ve taken from my father.  I don’t look for instant results at all. That’s why I couldn’t be a politician.”

If you ask me  who among contemporary  lyricists has inherited  my father’s legacy I’d say my  husband Javed Akhtar. Abba himself used to say this.  They both have this amazing vocabulary  which  if they wanted, they could flaunt  generously. Still they both keep their poetry simple.  There was never a word in Urdu that my father couldn’t give me  the meaning of.  I told Amit(Bachchan)  this. And he said, ‘My father could do this in both English and   Hindi.’ Can you imagine!  To this day it’s a big void in my life that I can’t  write Urdu, though I can read it. It’s something I have to do. Javed keeps telling me I’ve my father’s restless spirit.  But if I’m cleaning a cupboard that’s relaxation for me, though Javed doesn’t agree.”

I want to share an incident with you about Abba.  “The last time he ever got out of bed was 14 January 2002 which was his birthday. I had gone down to Mijima(our village in Azamgarh) to meet him. From early morning I had been sitting waiting for him to finish meeting all the villagers.  Finally my father hauled himself out of bed and asked my mother for some money.  No one had the guts to ask this very old and frail man where he was going   off to with his man-Friday.  Forty-five minutes later he came back, all drained out. He looks at me and says, ‘Mere gaon wale tumhara subah se bheja chaat rahen hai  na? Main apne chidiya ke liya khaas taur se wohsamose lekar aaya hoon jo ussey bahut pasand hai.’ That was the last  time he moved out of bed. When Abba  passed away I realized nothing prepares you for  the loss of a  parent…NOTHING!  I was completely  devastated. But now four years later I feel his spirit envelopes me like the air I breathe. I remember him with celebration. I do not remember him with sorrow….My brother Baba Javed, his poem ‘Ajeeb Aadmi’ on my father…these have helped me heal.”

“My mother was a remarkable companion to my father. It was an amazing relationship. I was attracted to Javed because  he was exactly like my father. In getting to know Javed I got to know my father.  Like Abba, Javed is a feminist.  My father had this complete dependence on domestic matters on  my mother . Even I’ve to buy all the clothes and shoes for Javed. Likewise the tailor who stitched my father’s kurta-pyjamas  never saw his face. Neither Abba  and Javed have seen the kitchen in the house. Nor can they fix anything around  the  house. But  both can do anything  if they set their heart  on  it. Javed fights to win. I fight to  play the game…..My brother Baba is an extreme introvert. He shared an extremely deep relationship with my father.  Baba’s wife Tanvi who’s the most talkative person in  the world would run out of the room when Abba  and Baba were together. They just shared silences.  Baba is now writing a script which he’ll direct. In that script you can see the prodigal son return. Abba was everything to me.  I continue with his good work in our village. He was my comrade, I remember when I went on my padyatra from Delhi to Meerut.  There was so much tension. But when I went to my father he caught my face in his hands and said, ‘Meri bahadur beti jaa rahi hai? Jao tumhein kuch nahin hoga. Sirf kaamyab hoke lautogi.’ It was like a gust of oxygen  pumped into me. Ours was an open  house during Abba. It continues to be so. My reference point  and the choices in life will always  come  from him,  his poetry, work, life and courage.”

Pushing back Amitabh & Sachin, SRK emerges as India's most popular father

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is all set to have a third child, is India's most popular father, says a survey conducted by a matrimonial site.

In the poll conducted by Shaadi.com on the occasion Father's Day, the actor has been voted the most popular father in India. SRK bagged the title pushing behind megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has two children - Shweta and Abhishek, and three grandchildren.

The poll was conducted among more than 11, 000 women in India and the results were declared on June 15, a day ahead of Father's Day.

Shah Rukh topped the list with 34.83 percent votes, while Amitabh came second with 31.58 percent followed by master blaster cricketer Sachin Tendulkar with 18.61 percent votes.

Apart from the most popular father, the poll also featured the most popular father-daughter relationship and Big B topped the list.

Senior Bachchan took the top spot with daughter Shweta, who is married to businessman Nikhil Nanda and has two children.

For the second spot, veteran actor Jeetendra Kapoor and daughter Ekta Kapoor received 35.06 percent votes, followed by Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor with 22.42 percent in third place.

Meanwhile, 44.85 percent respondents voted Shah Rukh and son Aryan as India's most popular father-son duo.

Shahrukh Khan was recently voted the most popular father in Bollywood in a Father’s Day poll conducted by a website. And why not, Srks’s love for his kids is a widely known affair.

The Baadshah of Bollywood despite his busy schedule never misses on any important moments with his kids. He is seen frequently with both Suhana and Aryan. Be it Aryan’s Karate classes or KKR matches, the family is seen cheering together.     

King Khan’s son Aryan Khan bears a striking resemblance to his father. He is currently studying at Sevenoaks School in London. The 15-year-old made his Bollywood debut at a very tender age.

Bollywood superstars might be always busy in shooting of their films, but they take out time for their kids. In fact, the stars behave like just another father when they are at their home with their children.

From acting to production, Shah Rukh Khan is one star who does everything for his kids. “When I write, the biggest wish is that my kids (Aryan, Suhana) and my family get to know everything they want to about me,” he said in an interview.

Even Ajay Devgn makes sure that he goes out with his kids at least once in a week. Hrithik Roshan also takes out his twin kids on a picnic every month.

Father’s Day Special: Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan left their kids

Bollywood is known for its fathers who either left their kids after divorce and moved ahead in life or destiny separated them from their kids. Be it Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, Dharmendra, Kareena Kapoor’s father Randhir Kapoor; they have carried on with life minus their kids. 

  

Sanjay Dutt 

Sanjay Dutt married actress Richa Sharma in 1987 but she died of brain tumour. He had to separate from his daughter Trishala born in 1987, who was taken by her maternal grandparents to United States. Since he married again, his daughter could not come close to him again. 

  

Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan’s marriage to Amrita Rao was like a film’s story. Royal blood Saif Ali Khan fell in love with older actress Amrita Rao. The two tied the knot in 1991 against his family’s wish. However, after a happy married life for 13 years with two kids Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, the couple divorced in 2004. Saif Ali Khan not only said goodbye to Amrita but had to separate from his kids as well. Luckily, like Reena Dutta, Amrita also brings Sara and Ibrahim to meet Saif and also attended his wedding with Kareena Kapoor. 

  

Aamir Khan 

Aamir Khan is one of the most respected Bollywood celebrities. Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta on 18 April 1986 and had two children with her Junaid and Ira. Aamir Khan ended the 15-year marriage in 2002 to marry Kiran Rao. Reena took the custody of both children and happily brings them to make them meet their father Aamir. 

  

Ranvir Shorey 

Ranvir Shorey had to separate with son Haroon soon after he was born. Konkona fell in love with Ranvir Shorey in 2007 and the two tied the knot in 2010. Konkona gave birth to son Haroon on March 15, 2011 but separated after differences emerged between them. However, Ranvir Shorey is still living in his Goregaon-Malad apartment in order to spend more and more time with his son. 

  

Randhir Kapoor 

Babita and Randhir Kapoor were a happy couple and were blessed with two beautiful daughters: Karisma and Kareena. But Randhir took to alcohol and started ruining the home environment with his drinking habits. Finally, the mother of two growing up girls, Babita took her stand and divorced him to give a better future to her kids. Babita has played a major role in making Karisma and Kareena make it big in Bollywood. 

  

Dharmendra

Already married to Prakash Deol and father of two, Dharmendra married Hema Malini despite of open opposition by elder son Sunny Deol. He even went ahead with changing his religion to marry Hema. Sunny Deol was furious over his marriage but it was too late. Dharmendra has now united with them but this upsets his other family of Hema and her daughters Esha and Ahana Deol. 

Kamal Haasan 

Kamal Haasan and Sarika were the most famous and loved couple of the 80s. They were one of the first couples to have lived together before marriage. The two got married after having their second child. But his intimate relationship with his twenty-two years younger co-star Simran Bagga, led to their split. He not just separated with Sarika but Shruti and Akshara as well.  

Sanjay Kapur 

Unfortunately, Babita’s daughter Karisma too separated from her husband Sanjay Kapur just a few years after her marriage. Delhi-based businessman Sanjay Kapoor married Karisma in 2003 and has now separated from her but is yet to file for divorce. While Sanjay lives in Delhi, Karisma lives in Mumbai with eight year old daughter Samaira and three year old Kiaan Raj Kapur.
