'Ghanchakkar' makers accused of plagiarism

`Ghanchakkar` makers accused of plagiarism

Little-known writer Dhirendra Kumar slaps a legal notice on the makers of an upcoming Emraan Hashmi-Vidya Balan starrer for allegedly stealing his script

It's just a few days away from release, but it looks like Rajkumar Gupta's film starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan is already facing legal tangles.

Dhirendra Kumar, who hails from Nepal, has accused the makers of Ghanchakkar of apparently hijacking his story to use as the plot of the film. According to Kumar, he had penned the script back in 2010-11 and had even registered it the same year.

While several big banner films face similar accusations exactly during the run-up to their release, Kumar apparently came across the similarities between his script and Gupta's film only after watching its promos on screen recently.

After finding out that the film apparently was on the similar lines, Kumar filed a complaint with the Film Writers' Association on May 20. He has now sent a legal notice to the production house, seeking a stay order on the film from the High Court.

The writer claims that after initially registering his script, he met Rajkumar Gupta through the writers' association and even narrated the script to him.

Says Kumar, `After I registered a complaint with the writers' association, I was asked to appear for a meeting by the dispute settlement committee.` However, at the last minute, Kumar claims he was told that the meeting had been postponed.

The writer says that the production house is yet to forward their reply on the case.

Advocate Satish Mishra says, `Most probably by Monday, the stay will be put on the film. The writer's name has not even been mentioned on the promotional hoardings.`

A spokesperson from UTV says, `We have received a notice from the lawyer of the said individual and we will reply to it. Needless to say, there is absolutely no truth to his claims.`
