Surrogacy pulls Shahrukh Khan into controversy

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan
Shahrukh Khan has been drawn into controversy over the illegal determination of sex of un-born child following surrogacy. Reportedly, the actor and his wife are expecting their third child in July through surrogacy and it is also reported that the child is a baby boy.
It shows that the actor has gone for a pre birth sex determination which is illegal. When a friend close to Shahrukh Khan was asked if the couple is expecting their third child through surrogacy, he refused to speak up on the issue. "We are not commenting," said the friend.
Maharashtra state health minister, Suresh Shetty has asked his officials from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to find out the truth on the behest of an inquiry demanded by an NGO and Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). "The civic body officials are the appropriate authority for implementation of the Pre-Conception Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act in the municipal corporation areas", said a senior official from BMC.
Shetty has confirmed that they have received an email from IRIA demanding an inquiry. He also told that once they come out with the findings, “appropriate action” will be taken.
A spokesperson for the IRIA said, “We’re demanding an inquiry, asking for the truth, we want to know who said what to whom.” He further stated, “These rules are applicable to one and all … there cannot be one rule for the rich and one for the ordinary people.”
A set of doctors from health department of the BMC went to the actor’s house in order to inquire the truth, but they were returned as Shahrukh’s manager told that the actor was not at home.
"Our officials went to his residence. They were told by Shah Rukh's business manager that the actor has not made any statement on expecting a baby boy through surrogacy," said Dr Arun Bamne, executive health officer of the civic body's health department.
In India, determination of the sex of the fetus is illegal. This law has been implemented considering the fall in the number of female fetuses which are aborted as undesired. This practice is common in the country as the cultural preference is for the male child. The law further regulates the use of pre natal diagnostic techniques like amniocentesis and ultrasound. These techniques can be used only to detect genetic abnormalities, chromosomal abnormalities, metabolic disorders, sex linked disorders and certain congenital malformations.
Shahrukh and his wife Gauri have two kids, a boy and a girl.
