The iconic Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan

who has ruled Bollywood for the last forty years is now appearing in a Hollywood movie. Bachchan will be seen in a cameo in the movie The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film is based on the famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald where a struggling young writer, Nick Carraway meets the millionaire Jay Gatsby and is drawn into the world of the super rich. Bachchan plays the part of Meyer Wolfsheim – a man who has a dark past and helps Nick to make some money. “I play Meyer Wolfsheim for about a few seconds... by the time you look down on your popcorn to pick another morsel, I'd be gone from the film...he, he...kinda short service... But with giants of Hollywood - Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire,” tweeted the actor. About two years ago, Luhrmann had visited Bachchan in his Mumbai home during one of his trips to India. The role was offered at that time. Bachchan has ruled Indian cinema during the seventies and eighties and continues to remain a strong force even today in Bollywood. However, this is his first venture to Hollywood.
The veteran actor reminisces about his experience of making a movie in the movie Mecca of the world. "As I look back to those moments, I can only have admiration and respect for all those that worked in this magnificent production. The amount of concentrated energy that goes in is quite remarkable," he said. He had been working with leading Hollywood artists like Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobby Maguire. Asked about his co stars, Bachchan said, "These huge stars of the other world, mingling and mixing and assisting one another in an effort that can only reflect well on screen, is a joy to experience. The effort in detail, on getting just the right shot, of seeing that each character and situation worked in accordance with a period film of the time, has been remarkable."
Asked about the difference between Bollywood and Hollywood, the veteran actor gave his opinion that the basic difference lay in culture. “I think they are two different worlds primarily because of the cultural difference. . . Our social and moral value are different from them,” he said. However, this has not presented him with any difficulty in acting in a Hollywood film. “I think a part of our profession of creativity is to understand and recognise other person’s creativity. . . It will be terrible for me to live in this cocoon and say I am the best. . . I know everything and there is nothing beyond that,” he said.
