Manna Dey health stable, still under observation




The health of legendary playback singer Manna Dey is stable now and he also seems to be responding to the treatment. He is admitted at a private hospital in Bangalore. He is still under observation and is admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on life support system. "Mannada is quite stable. He is responding to the treatment. No deterioration in his condition since Monday," spokesman of Narayana Health hospital, K.S. Vasuki said.
Manna Dey was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after he complained of breathlessness due to chest infection which later resulted in other complications. His elder daughter and son-n-law are tending to him apart from other relatives and friends. His younger daughter in US is unwell so she could not come to see her father.
“Dey is being looked after well. His elder daughter Rama and son-in-law Gyan are attending to him," said a family friend.
"Dey`s younger daughter (Sumita) lives in the US with family. As she is presently unwell, she is unable to come home. But two of his nephews have come from Kolkata to be with the family." added the family friend.
In May also, Manna Dey was admitted in the same hospital for about 20 days.
Very recently Chief Minister of Bengal, Ms. Mamta Banerjee has honored the multi lingual singer with the state’s Vishesh Maha Sangeet Samman award in connection to his immense contribution in the area of music and play back singing.
The original name of Manna Dey is Prabodh Chandra Dey. He is fondly called as Manna Dey. He was born on 1st May 1919 in Kolkata. He has contributed to playback singing in various languages like Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada and Assamese. He has more than 3500 songs to his credit. He is also conferred with various prestigious awards like Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhusan in 2005 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.
Manna Dey came to Mumbai in 1942. He started his career as a playback singer for the movie “Tamanna” which was released in 1943. Throughout his career he has sang for a number of movies and in different languages as well.  He has also performed Rabindra Sangeet and has many devotional albums in his name.  In 2011, he was presented with Lifetime Achievement Award from Filmfare.
Manna Dey has his Bengali autobiography “Jiboner Jalsaghorey” published by Ananda Publicationsin 2005, which was later translated in Hindi, English and Marathi.
