Huma Khan sentenced to prison for assaulting maid

Huma Khan has done a string of films all of C-grade category in the 80s and the 90s. However, the 47 year old actor is now in the news for all the wrong reasons. She has been sentenced to jail for 3 years for kidnapping and maltreating her house help.
The small-time actress had Reshma Mansigh Vishwakarma work as her house help. When her film career did not take off she shifted to Pune and took along with her, Reshma’s twelve year old daughter Shanti Mansingh Vishwakarma. Shanti often accompanied her mother to work in the actress’s ‘Rashmi Tanna Building’. She took the twelve year old minor along with her, without even informing her mother.
Shanti was with Huma Khan for eight months. The actress would send Reshma 1500/- per month. The girl was made to do all the household chores but was also tortured and physically assaulted. The actress’s brother Shamsuddin Sheikh allegedly raped the girl thrice.
After almost a year of being tortured, the girl was once able to jump out of the balcony of the house. She then reached Mumbai and told her mother about the assault. They then lodged a complaint at the police station against Huma Khan and her brother. The police and the doctors verified the wounds that indicated that she was severely beaten up. Her skin, on almost all parts of her body, had been burnt with cigarettes. Her tongue also had burn marks due to cigarettes.
The complaint was registered in 2008 that stated “Khan and Shaikh had illegally kept the girl and burnt her with cigarettes. Sixty-six injury marks have been found on her body."
RJ Qadri, Chief Public Prosecutor said, “She was arrested after the complaint on charges of rape, attempt to murder, kidnapping and criminal intimidation under Sections 307, 363, 376 read with 114 of the IPC. She was in Kalyan Jail but left on bail later.”
Her brother Shamsuddin was acquitted since he claimed to be impotent. Hemlata Deshmukh, who is the Additional Public Prosecutor has said, “We are not satisfied with the judgment that has been met out to Shammiuddin Shaikh.”
On this Friday, additional sessions judge AS Waghwase sentenced the actress for three years in prison. The judge has also levied a fine of 12,000/-.
Hemlata Deshmukh also added, “We are expecting a higher quantum of punishment in the case. We will appeal in the higher court against this verdict.”
