‘Vishwaroopam’ earns Rs.7.66 crore in the first weekend

Amid controversies, Kamal Hassan’s multi-crore project ‘Vishwaroopam’ hit the theatre not worldwide due to the protest on February 1^st. Made on a budget of Rs.95 crore, the movie grossed approximately Rs.7.66 crore in its opening weekend. The Hindi version of the movie earned Rs 1.99 crore in the opening day.

"Weekend had 50 percent occupancy on an average. More young crowds are coming, but it is less than what we expected. So far 6,000 people came," Punit Sahay, senior manager, programming and operations, Spice told reporters.

"The footfalls might not increase over weekdays but we are hoping that during next weekend more and more people will come," he added.

The multilingual film stars Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur and Pooja Kumar apart from Kamal Hassan. "The movie has done very well despite being a dubbed movie. Mixed kind of audience is coming," said Piyush Raizada, director Delight Cinema.

‘Vishwaroopam’ was earlier slated to release on January 25^th but due to the protest from the Muslim community, the film release deferred.

The film was banned in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and Andra Pradesh by the Muslim community. They claimed that the film showed the Muslim in bad light.Though the ban was lifted in Karnataka and Andra Pradesh, Kamal Hassan settled the dispute with TN Muslims and the film will now release in Tamil Nadu on February 7^th.
