Nandita Das heads to Cannes Film Festival

Mothering her 3-year old son is Nandita Das’ primary passion. But she continues to wear many hats as a screen and theatre actress, and a social activist.

Next month, Nandita heads to the Cannes Film Festival to be part of the jury to evaluate short-films.

Says Nandita excitedly, “I feel truly honoured that they have called me again to be part of their jury. I had earlier been invited to be on the Cannes jury in 2005.This time, I will be going with my husband Subodh and son Vihaan. So the whole family will be part of the Festival. I’m very much looking forward to it.”

She’s excited about the Cannes experience for several  reasons. “Firstly, I have always enjoyed watching short films and it is frustrating that we don't get to see so many of them, just because they are of a shorter duration. Even in literature I have always enjoyed short stories and not just novels. Secondly, mothering and other commitments have made my life a bit insular, and I am looking forward to this amazing stimuli that will surely motivate me to start work on my next film. High time! Thirdly, it is a very interesting section, as one gets to view amazing young talent, those bursting with pure passion and intent.”

Nandita is happy that the section she will judge won’t only honour talent but also ensure a life beyond the honour. “The section presents and highlight films from film schools, fiction or animation, showing deserving talent and encouraging them. The first prize winner of the Cinéfondation is also guaranteed that his or her first feature film will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival. Besides the Cinéfondation prizes, the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury will also award · The Palme d'Or - Short Film.”
