Vidya Balan to wear Sabyasachi saree at Cannes

Vidya Balan, the celebrity actress of Bollywood who has blazed a trailer with her exceptional performances of vast variety ranging from “The dirty picture”, “Parineeta” to “Kahaani” has been nominated to appear at a jury panel headed by famous director Steven Spielberg at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. Sticking to her avowed Indian look, Vidya has decided to grace the occasion in her trademark dress – the Indian saree.
While film personalities like Aishwariya Rai has favored western wear for such international events, the saree has already made its presence felt with Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor. Vidya is never a favorite with the fashion police, but she is determined to stick to her quintessential Indian look by appearing in a saree.
However, the actress was not without anxiety as she took time out from her busy shooting schedule of a special song for her upcoming film “Ghanchakkar” at the Filmalaya studio and rang up designer Sabyasachi. He has helped to turn Vidya into a brand ambassador of sort of the saree with his innovative design. Vidya was both excited and somewhat apprehensive as she called up the designer to come up with a slam proof look for her because of the extremely close scrutiny that will be directed at her way during the Red carpet event at the Cannes International film Festival.
According to a source, the designer was no less excited. "Sabyasachi is very excited to be a part of Vidya's big moment. They have become thick friends over the years and Vidya trusts the designer blindly when it comes to designing her sarees. However, Sabya is a bit nervous this time, as he doesn't want anything to go wrong on the red carpet." He even called up Nisha Kundnani who has worked as an independent stylist with Aamir Khan and wife Kiran in the past. "Sabya requested Nisha to carry alternative options for Vidya, in case there were last-minute changes," the source added.
The jury in addition to being headed by Spielberg will include Japanese director Naomi Kawase, French actor-director Daniel Auteuil, Taiwanese director-producer-scriptwriter Ang Lee who has directed the movie “Life of Pi”, British scriptwriter-director-producer Lynne Ramsay etc. The festival is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema. Before Vidya, Shekhar Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore had been part of Cannes jury. This jury will award the coveted Palme d’Or prize to one of the 19 competing films.
