Bhupen had spent night with Lata Mangeshkar, claims Bhupen’s estranged wife

It sounds something bizarre but legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika’s estranged wife Priyamvada Patel has linked Bhupen Hazarika with the nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar. Giving interview to an Assamese channel on Bhupen Hazarika’s death anniversary, Priyamvada Patel made a shocking revelation that the music maestro had a relationship with Mangeshkar.
Her allegation has enraged Lata’s fans as well as filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi who is a very good friend of Bhupen Hazarika.  Priyamvada held Lata’s equation as one of the reasons for separating from her husband 13 years after marriage. She said that whenever Lata comes to Kolkata, she used to visit their residence in the city.
“She used to come and they used to be together the whole night in one of the three bedrooms. She was crazy about him. He told me one day, ‘Look Priyam, in India, if a musician wants to come up, his songs have to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar’,” Priyamvada has been quoted saying.

“Later, when I asked him why he should be with a woman in the room the whole night, he said ‘ketiaba koribo lage’ (sometimes you have to do it). Once, musicians Kalyanji-Anandji were in one of the rooms. Kalyanji told me in Gujarati, ‘Behen, tame sui jao (sister you go to sleep), he won’t come up’,” Patel reportedly said.
Priyamvada Patel went to say that many people in Assam knew about Bhupen Hazarika’s illegal relationship with Lata but no one dare to speak about it.
She added that Hazarika indirectly mentioned Lata Mangeshkar’s name in his autobiography ‘Moi Eti Jajabor’ (I am a Nomad). But he hadn’t mentioned Lata’s name.
Priyamvada described an incident which left her in teary eyed and that was when she said, “She (the big star from Bombay) said she loves you (Hazarika) more than your parents and I do.”
