The much hyped movie ‘Lootera’ was released yesterday on 5th July all over India with low footfalls.
The movie is directed by film maker Vikramaditya Motwane and is jointly produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Anurak Kashyap and Vikas Behl. The lead actors are Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. This high budget movie received very good response from the preview shows. For the last one week before its scheduled formal release, the makers of the movie held previews for Bollywood fraternity. They appreciated the movie for its 50’s old look, cinematography, songs and intense chemistry between Ranveer and Sonakshi.
Backed by the positive reviews from the preview shows and heavy promotions of the movie, the producers had expected a bombastic response on the first day of its opening. On the contrary, ‘Lootera’ received a cold response from the audiences. The movie recorded 30-35% occupancy at multiplexes in the morning and noon shows. This occupancy is received from metro cities. The occupancy rates at the single screens outside the metros were even poorer.
‘Lootera’ has a different story. It is based on the story ‘The Last Leaf’ by O Henry. Set in the 50’s this movie shows a period romance. The movie observes an intense romance between Sonakshi and Ranveer which leads to extreme betrayal and finally leads to redemption. The story is offbeat from the other recent commercial successes. The makers of the movie are expecting a better business at the box office in the coming week. Few trade analysts also feel that the movie will bring better business on Saturday and Sunday.
‘Lootera’ was released with another movie ‘Policegiri’ in which Sanjay Dutt has played the lead. ‘Policegiri’ also received cold response from audiences. Sanjay could not promote the movie as he is in jail.
Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said, “‘Lootera’ opened with 20 per cent all-India and in Mumbai, at 18-20 per cent. The review of the film is good but it will do well in very select multiplexes as it is for a niche audience. ‘Policegiri’ opened with 10 per cent, both all-India and Mumbai and has been assigned very limited shows in multiplexes.”
Brijesh Tandon of H K Tandon and Co said, “Lootera is doing well in Delhi but very badly in UP. It’s the opposite with ‘Policegiri’. ‘Lootera’ is a slow film and UP audiences just don’t get it. ‘Lootera’ took an opening of 40 per cent in Delhi and 5 per cent in UP, whereas ‘Policegiri’ took an opening of 30 per cent in UP and 10 per cent in
