The film “Life of Pi” is closely based on the 2001 novel by the same name that was written by Yann Martel.
This film has been directed by Ang Lee and stars Irrfan Khan and Tabu among the known faces. The story revolves around Pi whose adult version is played by Irrfan Khan. Director Ang Lee is known for directing films such as “Hulk”, “Brokeback Mountain”, and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon”.
Pi finds himself in a life boat cast away in the sea. On the lifeboat other than him, he finds there an orangutan, a wounded zebra, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger. He develops a deep relationship with the tiger and they both survive the sea for 227 days often affected by delirium due to thirst and hunger.
Tabu plays the mother of Pi but he and Irrfan do not share any screen space in the film. On working with him on the same film the 41 year old actress said “Irrfan and I are not on screen together (in 'Life of Pi). He is playing the older Pi, so that way we are not paired together. But it's good, we have always done good films together. I hope our collaboration in future also remains because of good films.”
The two of them have acted before in films such as “Maqbool” and “Namesake” and with “Life of Pi” they only want to continue working in good films together.
At the premiere of the film Tabu said” I am excited, I am not nervous because the burden is not on my shoulders. It's the director's film, the boy's film, tiger's. So I have only enjoyed it and today also I have come to only enjoy it as an audience. It was great working in this film, the story is the hero of the film.”
Also seen at the premiere was Irrfan Khan with his family. He said talking about this film that he is proud of it. He was quoted as saying “Take the 3-D, for example: I have never seen it used this way – it’s almost poetic. The film is about faith, not organized religion, and I connect with that concept. It is a 100 million dollar film so it has to have a mass appeal, and that’s a feat as to convert this book into a film is tough. I am also happy that I manage to feature in the best films of so many filmmakers at home and overseas, whether it is this film, “Haasil” and “Paan Singh Tomar” from Tigmanshu Dhulia, Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Maqbool” or Mira Nair’s “The Namesake.”
The film saw a star-studded premiere with Anil Kapoor, Amrita Rao, Mukesh Bhatt, Kabir Khan with wife and Maria Goretti attending the show. Irrfan's wife SutapaSikdhar who is a screen writer was present to cheer for her husband with their son Ayan. Veteran actress Waheda Rahman was also seen, Maria Gorett was also present at the premiere of 'Life of Pi'. Filmmaker and actor Saurabh Shukla, actress Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak, David Dhawan, Kunal Kohli, Deepa Shahi, Gauri Shinde, Mukesh Bhatt, Satish Kaushik, Mini Mathur, Anil Kapoor were also present at the premiere. Tabu, Kabir Khan, Anurag Kashyap and Amrita Rao were among others.
