There has been quite some time since a romantic comedy film released. Romantic comedies are not an easy genre. Filmmakers though trying to make a film in this genre, normally make a love-story or a complete no-brainer and are not able to balance the two different genera. Sometimes they keep churning out movie after movie in the name of a romantic comedy which makes movie-goers feel like asking for a refund.
The upcoming film Barfi lies in this genre. What it seems from the promos is that it is a unique and refreshing love-story with a chunk of comedy. As the date of the release of this film (September 14th) nears, let us look at some of the plus-points of this film.
Storyline- the film is set in the times of the 1970s. The film has been mostly been shot in Kolkata and Darjeeling to give the old world charm. Barfi played by Ranbir Kapoor is the protagonist. Barfi is a speech and hearing impaired boy who is always spreading happiness around him as evident from the trailers. His body language clearly indicates his references for the film- Charlie Chaplin, Mr. Bean- Rowan Atkinson, and his grandfather- Mr. Raj Kapoor.
He is charming and handsome and falls in love with Shruti played by Ileana D’Cruz. She too reciprocates but because of parental and social pressure chooses to marry someone normal. Years later he falls in love with Jhilmil played by Priyanka Chopra. She is autistic and is missing and Barfi takes the help of Shruti to find her. This is when Shruti realises that love cannot be constricted by societal norms. The film definitely depicts a tale that is heart-warming.
The cast- Ranbir Kapoor is one of the biggest actor in Bollywood after his movie Rockstar. May be he still has not been able to enter the 100 crore mark like the other Khans. However, he has always been known for his acting finesse. Priyanka Chopra too has proved her mettle first in “Fashion” and has been reckoned as a good actress. She has not had a good time especially after Teri Meri Kahaani bombed at the box-office. With this film we hope she will be able to bounce back.
Also Ranbir and Priyanka will be featuring in this film after “Anjaana Anjaani”. Hope they will be able to create magic this time.
This is Ileana D’Cruz’ first film and therefore not much can be said about her acting talent. But what can be made out from the promos is that she has been able to do justice to her role.
The Director- Anurag Basu is a talented director. He has made wonderful films like “Gangster” and Life in a Metro. He also directed the first instalment of the Murder series titled “Murder”. His last film was “Kites” that was touted as the biggest film ever but it bombed at the box-office. Nevertheless, Anurag Basu can really handle relationships beautifully in his films, be it a sensual and passionate relationship like all his previous movies or a sweet, delicate one as in Barfi. He has definitely taken his direction ability a notch higher with this film.
